A lampshade, 25cm wide, in mustard. Getting a shade wrong is almost always a fit problem rather than a taste problem. Check the ring your fitting takes before the diameter, then hold the bottom width against the space rather than the height. At 25cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A shade is the cheapest way to change a light. The fitting stays, the wiring stays, and the character of the room moves — which is why replacing shades is usually the first thing worth doing in a house you have just moved into.

Pile marks where it is pressed and brushes back out again. If a perfectly even surface matters, velvet is the wrong cloth; if depth of colour matters, nothing else comes close.
