A floor lamp, 42cm wide, in black. At 42cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

Against a pale wall a dark frame is graphic and deliberate; against a dark wall it almost vanishes, leaving the glass floating. Brass warms a room in a way chrome and steel do not, because it reflects light yellow rather than white. Unlacquered, it will darken slowly and unevenly with handling, which most people come to prefer. The shade is included rather than sold alongside, which is worth checking against anything cheaper.

Wiring is for 1 E27 lamp up to 10-12W LED, supplied separately. E27 is the standard screw fitting, so a replacement is a supermarket purchase rather than a specialist one. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with a foot switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

The base is felted, which matters if it is going on a polished or waxed surface. At 3kg the weight is in the base, which is what stops a tall lamp walking when it is knocked. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
