A pendant hangs one shade on one drop. A chandelier carries several separately housed heads on a frame, so it lights a volume rather than a spot. That makes it the fitting for a dining room, a hall or a stairwell, and the wrong one for a small space where a single globe would do the job without crowding it.

Branching, radial and linear frames

A branching frame scatters globes at different heights and reads organic. A radial frame sets them at one level around a centre and reads formal. A linear frame runs them along a bar, which is the shape for a long table or a kitchen island where a round fitting would leave the ends dark.
