Description
The Solana is a 9 light semi-flush ceiling light built around a 550mm circular matt black metal plate with three descending stems arranged in a triangular configuration. Nine hand-blown smoked glass globes attach to these stems at staggered heights, each housing a G9 bulb (sold separately). The stems themselves are tubular metal finished in the same matt black as the base plate.
Designed for rooms with standard 2.4m ceiling heights where a full pendant drop would hang too low, the semi-flush mounting positions the lowest glass globe approximately 300-350mm below the ceiling rose. The 550mm base diameter suits dining areas over tables up to 1.8m long, living room central positions in rooms up to 20m², and entrance halls where a lower-hanging pendant would obstruct passage. The IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations only.
Each smoked glass globe shows slight tonal variation in the grey tint depending on the thickness of the blown glass walls — this is characteristic of the hand-blown manufacturing process. The matt black metal finish absorbs rather than reflects light, keeping visual focus on the glass and the bulb glow rather than the frame. With all nine G9 bulbs fitted the total load is typically 360W if using 40W halogen bulbs, or 36-45W if using LED G9 equivalents rated at 4-5W each. The fitting is dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmer switch and dimmable G9 bulbs.
The Solana arrives as separate components requiring assembly during installation — the metal stems thread onto the base plate and the glass globes clip or screw onto each stem end depending on the specific fitting mechanism used in this production batch. Electrical wiring connects through the central base plate to a standard UK ceiling rose. Installation requires two people due to the combined weight of the metal frame and nine glass globes once assembled.

Frequently Asked
What bulbs does the Solana take?
The fitting takes nine G9 capsule bulbs, sold separately. G9 bulbs are available in halogen (typically 28-40W) or LED (typically 3-5W). LED G9 bulbs reduce running costs and heat output compared to halogen. Check that G9 bulbs are marked as dimmable if pairing with a dimmer switch.
Is the Solana dimmable?
Yes, when paired with a compatible dimmer switch and dimmable G9 bulbs. The metal frame and glass globes themselves do not limit dimming — dimmer compatibility depends on the bulb technology chosen (LED G9 bulbs vary in their dimming performance by manufacturer).
What ceiling height is needed?
The semi-flush mounting suits standard UK ceiling heights of 2.4m or above. The lowest glass globe hangs approximately 300-350mm below the ceiling rose once installed, leaving sufficient headroom in typical residential rooms.
Does the smoked glass vary between globes?
Yes. Each globe is hand-blown, so the grey tint intensity and thickness of the glass walls differ slightly between individual pieces. This creates tonal variation when the bulbs are lit, which is a characteristic of the blown-glass manufacturing process rather than a defect.
