Description
Mistery is a 94x124cm bas-relief oil painting that combines oil on stretched canvas with handmade textile reliefs to form an abstract facial silhouette. The surface builds up through layered fabric fragments in cream, taupe, grey and terracotta tones, stitched and glued onto the canvas before being partially overpainted with oil. The fragmented geometric forms suggest a cubist-influenced portrait, with the textile elements projecting 4cm from the canvas to create shadow and depth.
Designed for wall installation in living rooms, dining rooms, studios or hallways where a vertical format suits narrow wall sections between doorways or beside tall furniture. The black polystyrene frame gives the piece a clean outer edge that contrasts with the textured, organic surface inside. The 4.2kg weight requires two wall fixings rated to hold at least 8kg combined for safe hanging on plasterboard or masonry walls.
The oil-painted background in soft whites and greys recedes behind the raised textile elements, which are built from linen and cotton fragments with visible weave textures. Some sections show deliberate distressing and wear marks, giving the portrait an archaeological quality as if uncovered from layers of time. The earthy palette sits comfortably in both warm-toned and cooler contemporary interiors, and the muted colour range means it can anchor a wall without competing with surrounding furniture or textiles.
Each textile element is hand-cut and positioned individually before being fixed to the canvas, so minor variations in placement and surface texture occur between pieces. The stretcher is solid wood rather than hollow frame, giving the piece rigidity and preventing warping over time. The 4cm projection means the artwork needs clearance from the wall and will cast its own shadow depending on room lighting direction.

Frequently Asked
How is the bas-relief constructed?
The textile elements are hand-cut from linen and cotton fabrics, then stitched and glued onto the stretched canvas before selected areas are overpainted with oil. The layered build-up creates a 4cm projection from the canvas surface.
What wall fixings are needed?
The 4.2kg weight requires two wall fixings rated to hold at least 8kg combined. Use appropriate fixings for your wall type — plasterboard walls need cavity anchors or fixings into studs, masonry walls can use standard wall plugs and screws.
Can the artwork be hung in direct sunlight?
Like all oil paintings and textile artworks, prolonged direct sunlight will cause fading and degradation over time. Position the piece on a wall that receives indirect daylight or artificial light only.
How is the surface cleaned?
The textile reliefs attract dust. Use a soft brush or low-suction vacuum with a brush attachment to remove surface dust. Do not use water, sprays or chemical cleaners on the textiles or oil-painted areas.
