Description
The Mercury Economy is a 2-core speaker cable supplied on a 100m reel, with 32 strands of 0.2mm copper clad aluminium (CCA) per core giving a 1.0mm² cross-sectional area. The cable is rated to carry up to 10A and is designed for low-to-medium power speaker runs in background music installations, small PA systems, and residential hi-fi setups where budget and flexibility matter more than maximum power handling.
The transparent PVC sheath allows the copper-coloured conductors to be visible through the insulation, with one core carrying a red polarity stripe for easy identification during termination. The figure-8 profile keeps both cores joined but allows them to be easily separated at the ends for connection to binding posts or terminal blocks. At 3.5 x 7.0mm overall, the cable is slim enough to route along skirting, behind furniture, or through cable trays without occupying significant space.
CCA conductors offer a lower-cost alternative to pure copper, trading some conductivity for lighter weight and easier handling on long runs. For applications where the speaker run is under 15-20m and power requirements stay below 100W per channel, the difference in performance versus pure copper is negligible. The 100m reel length suits installers working on multi-room audio, restaurant/bar zoning, or warehouse paging systems where multiple shorter runs are needed from a single spool.

Frequently Asked
What's the difference between CCA and pure copper speaker cable?
Copper clad aluminium has an aluminium core with a thin copper coating, making it lighter and cheaper than pure copper. CCA has slightly higher resistance, so it's best used on shorter runs (under 15-20m) and lower-power applications. For long runs or high-power systems, pure copper (OFC) cable offers better conductivity.
What power rating does this cable support?
The 10A current rating and 1.0mm² CSA support speaker systems up to approximately 100W per channel on runs under 15m. For higher power or longer distances, step up to a larger CSA cable to reduce resistance losses.
Can the two cores be separated?
Yes. The figure-8 profile joins the two cores but they can be easily split apart at the ends for connection to separate positive and negative terminals on amplifiers and speakers.
Is this cable suitable for outdoor use?
No. The PVC sheath is not UV-stabilised or weatherproof. For outdoor speaker installations, use a cable rated for external or burial applications.
