Description

The Knightsbridge 5A unswitched round pin socket provides a single outlet for lighting circuits or low-power appliances behind an antique brass screwless faceplate. The round pin configuration follows BS 546 rather than the standard 13A rectangular-pin format, making this socket specific to lighting installations or older circuit wiring where 5A round pins are required by the existing infrastructure.

Designed for residential and period restoration work where lighting control is handled separately by a switch elsewhere in the circuit, the socket has no on/off switch of its own. The screwless cover plate clips onto a metal sub-frame fixed to the back box, concealing all fixings behind the faceplate once installed. The antique brass finish is a warm, aged metallic tone with darker patina that pairs with traditional, heritage and classical interiors.

The 201 stainless steel construction provides corrosion resistance while the 4.3mm projection from the wall keeps the socket profile low against the surface. The built-in gasket between the faceplate and the wall prevents dust ingress during installation and provides a clean flush seal once fitted. The 25mm minimum back box depth requirement is compatible with standard UK mounting boxes.

Frequently Asked

What is a 5A round pin socket used for?

5A round pin sockets are primarily used in lighting circuits where the socket itself is controlled by a separate wall switch elsewhere in the circuit. They also appear in older properties where the wiring infrastructure was designed around BS 546 round pin sockets rather than the modern 13A rectangular pin standard. The 5A rating limits the socket to low-power appliances drawing up to 1,150W on 230V mains.

Why is this socket unswitched?

In a typical lighting installation, the socket is controlled by a wall switch elsewhere on the circuit that isolates the supply before it reaches the socket. Adding a switch at the socket itself would be redundant. The unswitched design also keeps the faceplate cleaner and simpler in appearance, which suits period interiors.

What back box depth is required?

A 25mm minimum back box depth is needed for safe installation. The screwless cover plate adds 4.3mm of projection from the wall once fitted, giving a total installed depth of approximately 29mm from the finished wall surface.

Is the screwless plate removable for redecorating?

Yes. The antique brass cover plate clips onto a separate metal sub-frame fixed to the back box. The cover can be removed for painting around the socket and re-clipped without needing to re-wire the socket itself.
