Description
The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch is designed for three-way lighting circuits where a single light or lighting group is controlled from three separate switch positions. It sits between two 2-way switches in the circuit, most commonly on staircases, long hallways or rooms with multiple access points. The switch features a polished brass flat plate with a matching brass metal rocker and visible fixing screws.
The flat plate design projects just 2.5mm from the wall once installed, making it the thinnest profile in the Knightsbridge range. This works well in period properties where deeper plates would sit proud of shallow architraves or where the visual bulk of traditional switches interrupts decorative plasterwork. The polished brass finish is high-gloss, not lacquered, so it develops a natural patina over time unless actively polished.
The 10AX rating handles lighting loads up to 2,300W at 230V, which accommodates standard domestic lighting circuits including LED, halogen and incandescent bulbs. The switch requires a minimum 16mm back box depth, allowing it to fit into shallow wall cavities or plasterboard installations where space behind the wall is limited. Construction is premium-grade steel throughout, with an earth terminal and Class I rating requiring connection to circuit earth.

Frequently Asked
What is an intermediate switch used for?
An intermediate switch is used in 3-way or 4-way lighting circuits where a single light needs to be controlled from three or more switch positions. It sits between two 2-way switches in the circuit. Common applications include staircases with switches at top, bottom and mid-landing, or long hallways with switches at both ends and in the middle.
What back box depth is required?
The switch requires a minimum 16mm back box depth. This shallow requirement makes it suitable for plasterboard installations, shallow wall cavities and retrofit situations where deeper boxes cannot be accommodated.
Does the polished brass tarnish?
The polished brass is not lacquered, so it will develop a natural patina over time through oxidation and handling. This can be maintained as a warm aged tone or regularly polished back to high-gloss using standard brass cleaner.
What other finishes are available in this flat plate range?
Knightsbridge produces this flat plate intermediate switch in multiple finishes including polished chrome, brushed chrome, satin chrome, antique brass, matt black and white. Use the search function to find other variants in stock at Niori.
