Alabaster Wall Lights

Our alabaster wall lights are shaped from natural stone, with each panel cut to let warm light pass through the material's veining. The range covers small, medium and large sizes in brushed brass, matt black, copper and soft white finishes, in both integrated LED and E27 fittings. Known as wall sconces in the US, these pieces suit bedrooms, hallways, stairwells and living rooms. We ship to the UK, US and worldwide.

What is alabaster, and why we use it for wall lights

Alabaster is a soft, slightly translucent natural stone that has been used in lighting for thousands of years. The variety used across our Niori range is gypsum alabaster, hand-cut from selected blocks and finished so the stone's internal veining stays visible. When a bulb sits behind the panel, light passes through the mineral structure rather than bouncing off it, producing a warm, diffused glow that shifts subtly across the surface.

Every alabaster wall light in the range carries its own veining pattern, colour shifts and small mineral inclusions. This is the property of the stone, not a manufacturing fault. Real alabaster is a natural material, not moulded resin or synthetic marble of the kind found in mass-market listings, and the difference shows clearly under light.

Alabaster wall lights and alabaster sconces: the same fixture, two markets

British and American customers use different words for the same piece. In the UK and Australia, the standard term is alabaster wall light. In the United States, the same fixture is usually called an alabaster sconce or alabaster wall sconce, with alabaster wall sconce lighting and alabaster sconce light fixture appearing as longer descriptors. Our range covers both vocabularies: every piece here is a wall-mounted alabaster light fixture, whether you searched for a wall light, a wall sconce or vanity lights.

Within the range you will find 1-light and 2-light configurations, oval and rectangular forms, and integrated LED or E27 bulb fittings. Sizes run from small (around 30cm wide) through medium to large feature pieces suited to entrance halls and double-height stairwells.

Where to use alabaster wall lights at home

Bedside is the most common placement. A pair of alabaster wall sconces mounted either side of the bed gives soft, directed reading light without the heat or glare of an overhead source, and frees up the bedside table.

In hallways and along stairwells, alabaster wall lights act as repeating ambient sources. Spaced evenly along a corridor, they produce a calm wash of light without bright spots. For stairwells, larger sculptural pieces like the Caterris 2-light in matt black hold their own against the height of the space.

In living and dining rooms, wall-mounted alabaster works alongside table lamps and pendants to layer the lighting at different heights. For bathrooms, US customers often search for alabaster vanity lights to flank a mirror. Our current range is rated IP20, which means these pieces suit bathroom zones away from direct water contact rather than splash zones above sinks or shower areas.

Choosing the right alabaster wall light: size, finish and bulb

Size first. Small pieces (around 30cm wide) suit bedside positions, narrow hallways and tight zones between architectural features. Medium sizes work as repeating sources along longer corridors and in standard-height living rooms. Large pieces are the right choice for double-height entrance halls, stairwells and rooms where the fixture acts as a feature in its own right.

Finish next. We offer brushed brass, matt black, soft white and copper metalwork. Brushed brass reads warm and works in transitional and contemporary interiors. Matt black gives the strongest contrast against a pale alabaster panel and suits modern and minimalist rooms. Soft white keeps the stone as the visual focus and reads quietly in pale schemes. Copper sits between brass and pink-toned interiors.

Bulb fitting last. Integrated LED pieces arrive with the light source built in, drawing low wattage and giving a consistent warm-white output. E27 pieces let you choose your own bulb and colour temperature. Both options sit across the range; the product page lists which applies to each piece.

Care and maintenance of alabaster wall lights

Alabaster is durable but slightly porous, so it needs different care from glass or ceramic shades. For everyday dusting, use a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid feather dusters, which can leave fine scratches over time.

For marks and fingerprints, dampen a soft cloth lightly with plain water and wipe gently. Do not use soap, alcohol-based cleaners, glass sprays or abrasive cloths on the stone; these can erode the natural finish. For deeper marks, a small amount of pH-neutral stone cleaner applied with a soft cloth removes residue without affecting the alabaster. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry the surface fully.

Keep alabaster fixtures away from regular contact with moisture or steam. We include care instructions with every alabaster piece; if you are unsure how to clean a specific finish, contact us before applying any product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your alabaster wall lights made from real stone?

Yes. Every alabaster wall light we sell under our Niori own-brand range is made from natural alabaster, hand-cut from selected blocks of gypsum alabaster and finished so the stone's veining stays visible. We do not use moulded resin, synthetic marble or alabaster-effect glass. Because the material is natural, every piece carries its own pattern of veining and tonal variation; two units of the same model will look subtly different from one another.

What is the difference between an alabaster wall light and an alabaster sconce?

There is no difference in the fixture itself. Alabaster wall light is the standard British and Australian term; alabaster sconce, alabaster wall sconce and alabaster wall sconce lighting are the American terms for the same wall-mounted piece. Every product in this range is both an alabaster wall light and an alabaster sconce. If you searched using either vocabulary, the listings here are what you are looking for.

How do you clean an alabaster wall light?

For everyday cleaning, dust the alabaster surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For light marks or fingerprints, use a soft cloth dampened with plain water. Avoid soap, alcohol-based cleaners, glass sprays and abrasive cloths, which can erode the natural finish of the stone. For deeper marks, apply a small amount of pH-neutral stone cleaner with a soft cloth, then rinse with a damp cloth and dry fully. We include care instructions with every piece.

Where should I install alabaster wall lights in a home?

The most common placements are either side of a bed (as bedside reading lights), along hallways and stairwells as repeating ambient sources, in living rooms to layer light at a lower level than ceiling fixtures, and flanking mirrors as vanity lights in bathrooms outside splash zones. Smaller sizes suit narrow corridors and bedside positions; medium and large pieces suit dining rooms, stairwells and double-height entrance halls.

Can alabaster wall lights be used in bathrooms?

Our current alabaster wall light range is rated IP20, which means it is suitable for bathroom zones away from direct water contact, for example flanking a vanity mirror in a well-ventilated bathroom. We do not recommend IP20 alabaster pieces for shower enclosures, directly above basins where splashing is frequent, or any zone with persistent steam contact. Alabaster is slightly porous, and prolonged moisture can darken the stone over time. For wetter zones, choose IP-rated alternatives.

Do your alabaster wall lights use LED bulbs?

Both options run across the range. Some pieces, including the Selvara and Orvani designs, ship with integrated LED light sources built in, drawing low wattage and producing a warm-white output without a separate bulb. Other pieces, including the Caterris 2-light, take standard E27 bulbs so you can choose your own brightness and colour temperature. Each product page lists the bulb fitting, wattage and colour temperature for that specific piece.
