What is alabaster, and what makes it different

Alabaster is a soft, slightly translucent natural stone, used in lighting for thousands of years. Modern alabaster lighting is cut from gypsum alabaster, the stone variant most often used for shades and column bases today. Where frosted glass diffuses light uniformly and ceramic blocks it, alabaster transmits light through layered mineral, so the glow carries the stone's own veining and tonal shifts.

Every block of alabaster has its own pattern, so no two floor lamps in our range read identically. This is the property that makes the material worth using. The stone is real, not a moulded resin or synthetic substitute, and the variation is the point.

Choosing an alabaster floor lamp for living rooms and bedrooms

Floor lamps sit at a height that fills the gap between table lamps and overhead lighting, giving directed ambient light at standing or seated eye level. Most of our alabaster floor lamps are tagged for living rooms and bedrooms, where soft, low-glare illumination matters most.

In a living room, an alabaster column lamp works well beside a sofa, reading chair or sideboard, where the warm white glow reads against soft furnishings without competing with overhead pendants. In a bedroom, a slim modern alabaster lamp set beside a wardrobe or in a corner adds a second light layer for late evenings, separate from bedside table lamps.

For US customers searching for an antique alabaster floor lamp, our range is new-make designer work rather than vintage stock. The forms reference historical column lamps, but each piece is produced fresh under our own brand, with current LED hardware inside.

Column, stacked and minimalist silhouettes in our Niori range

The range covers three core silhouette families. Column designs, including Vellum and the larger Stratalux stacked column, treat the alabaster as a solid vertical form, sometimes broken into segmented tiers. The stone reads as the body of the lamp, with metal kept to the base plate and top cap.

Linea is the minimalist line: a single slim alabaster shade on a clean upright stem, available in brushed brass and matt black. Atria sits between the two, with a small alabaster shade on a fine column suited to compact corners and bedrooms. Each lamp is finished with integrated LED in warm white, so there is no separate bulb to source.

Every piece is hand-cut from selected blocks of alabaster, then polished to a smooth finish that lets the stone's internal structure show through under light. Two units of the same model will differ slightly in veining direction and tone; for projects requiring matched pairs, contact us and we will pair units from the same batch.

Care and maintenance

Alabaster is durable but slightly porous, so it should be cleaned differently from a glass lamp shade or ceramic base.

For everyday care, dust the alabaster surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For light marks or fingerprints on alabaster lamp shades, use a soft cloth dampened with plain water. Avoid soap, alcohol-based cleaners, glass sprays and abrasive cloths; these can erode the stone's natural finish over time. For deeper marks, a small amount of pH-neutral stone cleaner applied with a soft cloth removes residue without affecting the surface. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry fully.

Keep alabaster floor lamps out of zones with regular steam or splash contact. We include care instructions with every piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your alabaster floor lamps made from real natural stone?

Yes. Every floor lamp in our range is worked from real, natural alabaster stone, not moulded resin, synthetic substitute or backlit acrylic. We use gypsum alabaster, the variant used in most modern alabaster lighting, hand-cut and polished so the stone's veining and tonal variation stay visible under light. Because each block of alabaster has its own pattern, two lamps of the same model will read slightly differently from one another.

How do I clean and care for an alabaster floor lamp?

For everyday cleaning, dust the alabaster surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For light marks or fingerprints on alabaster lamp shades, use a soft cloth dampened with plain water. Avoid soap, alcohol-based cleaners, glass sprays and abrasive cloths; these can erode the stone's natural finish. For deeper marks, a pH-neutral stone cleaner applied with a soft cloth removes residue without damaging the alabaster. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry fully. Care instructions are included with every piece.

What bulb or LED do your alabaster floor lamps use?

Our alabaster floor lamps use integrated LED in warm white. The light source is built into the fixture rather than fitted as a replaceable bulb, so there is nothing separate to source at delivery. The warm white temperature is chosen to complement the natural cream tones of the alabaster; cooler colour temperatures can make the stone read flat.

How tall are alabaster floor lamps, and where do they suit best?

Our alabaster floor lamps sit in the standard floor-lamp height range, designed to give ambient light at standing and seated eye level. Most pieces are tagged for living rooms and bedrooms. Column and stacked forms such as Vellum and Stratalux suit larger living spaces and entrance corners; the slimmer Linea and Atria lines suit compact corners, bedroom reading positions and side-of-wardrobe placements. Exact dimensions are listed on each product page.

Do you ship alabaster floor lamps to the US?

Yes. We ship our full alabaster floor lamp range to the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and worldwide from our UK studio. International shipping is calculated at checkout, with customs handled through our courier where applicable. For larger or multi-piece orders, contact us directly and we will arrange consolidated shipping.
