Frequently Asked

What is BS5839-1 and why does it require a log book?

BS5839-1 is the British Standard code of practice for fire detection and alarm systems. It requires building owners to maintain a written record of all tests, inspections, faults and servicing to demonstrate the system is being properly maintained. This log book provides the structure to meet that requirement.

Who should fill in the log book?

Weekly tests are typically recorded by the designated responsible person or fire warden at the premises. Quarterly and annual services are usually carried out by qualified fire alarm engineers who sign and date their entries. All personnel making entries should record their name and role.

How often does a fire alarm system need to be tested?

BS5839-1 requires weekly tests (typically a different call point each week), quarterly inspections by a competent person, and annual servicing by a qualified engineer. The log book contains sections for each of these activities with prompts for what to check.

Is this log book required by law?

While BS5839-1 itself is not a legal document, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires responsible persons to keep records of fire safety measures. Fire officers, insurers and health and safety inspectors routinely request evidence of fire alarm maintenance, making a compliant log book effectively mandatory for most commercial premises.
