The Abelia is a textured ceramic vase in cream and natural tones, with a rounded body that narrows to a short neck. The surface is worked in close vertical lines, a raised cream glaze banded with a softer oatmeal tone, and it carries a light sheen rather than a flat matt finish. It stands 32cm tall, a table or mantel height rather than a floor vase, and the full, rounded shape gives it presence on its own, empty, as much as when it is filled.

The narrow neck holds stems upright and stops them splaying, so it suits a loose bunch of fresh flowers, a few dried grasses or a single branch equally well. Sat on a mantel, a console, a shelf or a dining table it works as a quiet decorative piece, and a pair either side of a shelf or a fireplace reads well too. Because the tones are soft and neutral, it sits with both pale, natural rooms and darker schemes, and it holds its own without needing flowers in it at all.

It is made from stoneware ceramic, a solid, weighty body that sits steadily on a surface, and as a ceramic piece the tone and the texture vary a little from one vase to the next, which is part of the handmade look. For fresh flowers you can drop a slim liner inside if you would rather keep water off the glaze, and to clean it, rinse with warm water or wipe with a damp cloth and avoid soaking it for long periods. Kept dry and dusted, it holds its finish.
