Polar Short Round Pendant Light - Black

The Polar is an 82mm diameter cylindrical pendant light constructed from matt black aluminium with a plastic diffuser at the base, housing a GX53 15W LED that directs light downward. The compact cylinder measures 85mm in height and 82mm across, making it small enough to be used singly over a countertop or clustered in groups of three to five over kitchen islands and dining tables.

The suspension is height-adjustable between 11cm and 108.5cm, allowing the pendant to be set low over a worktop for task lighting or higher in open-plan ceilings where ambient rather than focused light is needed. The GX53 bulb base sits recessed inside the cylinder with the light emitting downward through the diffuser, so the fitting acts as a directional downlight rather than an all-around pendant. This makes it particularly useful in kitchens where ceiling-mounted downlights would require recessed holes and where surface-mounted directional light is preferred.

The matt black finish on the aluminium body absorbs rather than reflects ambient light, so the pendant reads as a dark cylindrical form during the day and becomes a soft downlight source when switched on. The 82mm diameter keeps the visual footprint small when multiple units are used in a row or cluster. The IP20 rating limits use to dry indoor areas only.

What is a GX53 bulb and can it be replaced?

GX53 is a low-profile twist-and-lock LED bulb format common in European surface-mounted downlights. The bulb is replaceable if it fails, though GX53 bulbs are less widely stocked in UK retail than GU10 or E27. Maytoni typically includes the bulb with the fitting.

Can multiple Polar pendants be used together?

Yes. The small 82mm diameter makes the Polar well-suited to clustering in groups of three to five over kitchen islands or dining tables. Space them 300-400mm apart for even coverage without visual clutter.

What height should the pendant hang above a worktop?

For task lighting over a kitchen worktop or island, position the pendant 600-750mm above the surface. For dining tables, 700-800mm above the table gives clearance for seated diners while keeping the light focused on the tabletop.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

No. The IP20 rating means the fitting is not protected against moisture and must only be used in dry indoor areas. Bathrooms require IP44 or higher for zones near baths and showers.
