Description
The Mercury is a 3-terminal in-line rocker switch rated at 6A 250Vac, housed in a white moulded enclosure measuring 30 x 78mm. The switch breaks into the live and neutral conductors of a mains cable, allowing the power to a connected appliance or lighting fitting to be controlled without reaching the plug or wall socket. Screw terminals inside the enclosure secure the incoming and outgoing conductors, and integral cable clamps provide strain relief to prevent tension on the wiring pulling at the terminal connections.
Designed for lamps, small appliances and low-power electrical devices, the Mercury suits installations where a switch is needed partway along a cable run rather than at the plug, the wall or the device itself. Typical applications include bedside table lamps where the switch needs to be within reach of the bed, standing lamps where the switch should sit near the base rather than at floor level, and workshop or garage task lights where the switch needs to be positioned at a convenient height on the drop cable. The 6A rating handles devices drawing up to 1,440W on 240V mains.
The white enclosure has a low profile that minimises the visual interruption of the cable line, and the rocker mechanism gives positive on/off feedback with an audible click. The switch complies with BS EN60669-1, the UK and European standard covering switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations. Installation requires the mains cable to be cut, stripped and connected to the screw terminals inside the enclosure, with live and neutral passing through the switch contacts and earth (if present) passed straight through without switching.

Frequently Asked
What appliances can this switch handle?
The 6A rating at 250Vac supports loads up to 1,440W. This covers most table lamps, standing lamps, small fans, and low-power workshop lights. It does not suit high-draw heating appliances, kettles or power tools.
How is it wired?
The mains cable is cut at the point where the switch is needed. The cable ends are stripped, and live and neutral conductors are connected to the screw terminals inside the enclosure, passing through the switch contacts. The earth conductor (if present) passes straight through the switch without being switched, maintaining continuous earth protection.
Can it be fitted to a cable that's already in use?
Yes, but the appliance must be unplugged and the cable fully de-energised before cutting and stripping the conductors. The switch is not designed for live installation.
What safety standards does it meet?
The switch complies with BS EN60669-1, the UK and European standard for switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations. The cable clamps provide strain relief as required by the standard, preventing tension on the cable from loosening the terminal connections.
