Description
The Knightsbridge T5 5ft emergency batten houses a single 49W T5 fluorescent tube (sold separately) inside a 1475mm white pressed steel body with a high-frequency ballast and integrated emergency lighting circuit. The unit operates in three modes: maintained (lamp on continuously with emergency backup), non-maintained (lamp off until mains failure), and switched (standard switched control with emergency backup), selectable during installation.
Designed for corridors, classrooms, utility rooms, storerooms, stairwells and back-of-house commercial spaces where emergency lighting compliance is required, the batten provides 3 hours of backup illumination on battery during mains power failure. The slim 63mm width and 82.5mm projection allow the fitting to sit close to the ceiling or wall without protruding into walkways or tight clearance zones. The IP20 rating suits dry interior environments only.
The pressed steel housing is powder-coated in white to blend with standard ceiling finishes, and the polycarbonate diffuser and end caps provide impact resistance in high-traffic areas. The high-frequency control gear reduces flicker and hum compared to older magnetic ballasts, making the fitting suitable for occupied spaces where noise and light quality matter. The Class I electrical construction requires earth connection during installation.

Frequently Asked
What tube does this batten take?
The fitting takes a single 49W T5 fluorescent tube, 1449mm in length (5ft). The tube is not included and must be purchased separately. Standard T5 tubes from Philips, Osram and other manufacturers are compatible.
How long does the emergency backup last?
The integrated emergency circuit provides 3 hours of backup illumination during mains power failure. The battery recharges automatically when mains power is restored.
What's the difference between maintained, non-maintained and switched modes?
Maintained mode keeps the lamp on continuously, with emergency backup during power cuts. Non-maintained mode keeps the lamp off until mains failure, when it switches on automatically. Switched mode allows normal wall-switch control with emergency backup. The mode is selected during installation via internal wiring configuration.
Can this be used in damp or outdoor locations?
No. The IP20 rating limits the batten to dry interior spaces only. It is not suitable for bathrooms, washrooms, outdoor canopies or any area where moisture or splash contact is likely.
