Description
The Knightsbridge 3W LED emergency bulkhead is a low-profile polycarbonate fitting with an integrated 3-hour battery backup, designed to provide emergency escape route lighting in commercial, hospitality and industrial buildings. The IP65 rating protects the internal components against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation in covered positions.
The bulkhead can be wired in maintained mode (where the LED operates continuously on mains power and switches to battery during a power cut) or non-maintained mode (where the LED only illuminates during a power cut). This flexibility allows the same fitting to be used as both a functional corridor light and an emergency-only indicator depending on building requirements. The hinged screwless gear tray gives access to the wiring terminals and battery compartment without removing the entire fitting from the wall.
The white polycarbonate body measures 216mm x 97mm x 48mm and weighs substantially less than metal alternatives, reducing strain on plasterboard fixings and simplifying single-person installation. Two diffuser options are supplied in the box: a prismatic lens that spreads light evenly across corridors and staircases, and an opal diffuser that provides softer illumination where glare control matters. Both diffusers deliver 150 lumens in normal and emergency modes at 6000K daylight white, which meets UK Building Regulations Part B visibility requirements for escape routes.
The integrated SMD LED array is rated at 3W with an efficacy of 48.8 lumens per watt and a colour rendering index above 80, ensuring that exit signage and corridor features remain clearly distinguishable under emergency conditions. The fitting carries a 3-year warranty on the LED and housing (battery excluded, as batteries degrade with charge cycles and require replacement every 3-4 years as part of routine maintenance).

Frequently Asked
What's the difference between maintained and non-maintained modes?
In maintained mode, the LED operates continuously on mains power and switches to battery backup during a power cut. In non-maintained mode, the LED only illuminates when mains power fails. The mode is selected during installation by wiring configuration — the same fitting supports both.
How long does the battery last in emergency mode?
The integrated battery provides 3 hours of illumination at 150 lumens when fully charged. UK Building Regulations typically require a minimum of 3 hours for escape route lighting, which this fitting meets.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, with the IP65 rating protecting against dust and water jets. However, the fitting should be installed in a covered or sheltered position rather than exposed to direct rain or UV degradation over time, as polycarbonate can yellow under prolonged UV exposure.
How often does the battery need replacing?
Emergency lighting batteries typically require replacement every 3-4 years depending on usage and charge cycles. The hinged gear tray allows access to the battery compartment without removing the entire fitting from the wall.
