Description
The Kioto is a set of three fibreclay planters in matte black, each with vertical ribbed detailing running from rim to base. The set includes three sizes: large (44cm diameter × 41cm height), medium (34cm × 31cm), and small (24cm × 21cm). Each planter is moulded from a composite of fiberglass and clay resin, giving a weight of approximately 11kg for the large planter while maintaining structural strength for both indoor and outdoor placement.
Designed for grouped arrangements on patios, terraces, living room corners, and entrance halls, the three sizes can be clustered together to create visual depth or spaced across a longer area to provide rhythm. The rounded bowl shape with a narrow base gives the planters a stable footprint without needing additional weighting, and the matte finish resists showing watermarks or mineral deposits compared to glossy surfaces. The ribbed surface texture also helps conceal minor scratches or scuffs that develop with outdoor use.
The fibreclay construction resists cracking in frost better than terracotta or ceramic, though drainage holes should still be checked to prevent water freezing inside the planter base during winter months. The black finish pairs with both warm-toned interiors (terracotta tiles, oak floors, brass accents) and cooler palettes (concrete, steel, grey render). Suitable for direct planting with compost or for housing plants in nursery pots, depending on whether drainage is needed.

Frequently Asked
Are these planters frost-resistant?
Fibreclay is more frost-resistant than terracotta or ceramic, but standing water inside the planter can still freeze and cause cracking. Ensure drainage holes are clear, or bring planters under cover during prolonged sub-zero temperatures if they hold moisture.
Do the planters have drainage holes?
Check the base of each planter on arrival. Some fibreclay planters are supplied with pre-drilled drainage holes, others are sealed and designed to house plants in nursery pots. If direct planting is needed and no holes are present, fibreclay can be drilled with a masonry bit.
Can these be used outdoors year-round?
Yes, provided they are positioned on a stable surface and drainage is managed. The matte black finish may fade slightly under intense direct sunlight over several years, but the structural integrity of the fibreclay remains intact.
What size plants suit each planter?
The large planter (44cm diameter) suits medium shrubs, large ferns, or grouped succulents. The medium (34cm) works for snake plants, trailing pothos, or small palms. The small (24cm) suits herbs, compact succulents, or single trailing plants like string of pearls.
