Description

This magnifying glass pairs a curved recycled buffalo horn handle with a 10cm diameter steel-rimmed lens. The horn section measures approximately 18cm along the curve and joins the steel rim via a brass-toned pivot. Each handle shows different grain patterns and tonal banding depending on the section of horn used, ranging from honey amber through to dark brown with natural translucency at the thinner edges.

Designed as both a functional desk accessory and a decorative object, the magnifying glass suits studies, home offices, libraries and side tables where fine print or small objects need occasional magnification. The 10cm lens provides 2-3x magnification depending on working distance, handling tasks like map reading, inspecting hallmarks, or reviewing small print without needing to reach for reading glasses.

The steel frame gives the lens structural support without adding excessive weight — the complete piece weighs 267g, light enough to hold comfortably in one hand for extended use. The smooth finish on both the horn and the steel requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional wiping with a dry cloth. Buffalo horn is a natural material and varies in colour, grain and translucency between individual pieces, so no two handles look identical.

Frequently Asked

What magnification does the lens provide?

The 10cm diameter lens provides approximately 2-3x magnification depending on the distance between the lens and the object being viewed. This suits tasks like reading small print, inspecting stamps or hallmarks, and map reading.

Does the horn vary between pieces?

Yes. Each handle is cut from recycled buffalo horn, so the grain pattern, tonal banding and translucency differ between individual magnifying glasses. This is a feature of the natural material, not a defect.

How is the horn handle maintained?

Wipe the horn with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. For stubborn marks, a barely-damp cloth is acceptable, but avoid soaking the horn. Do not use chemical cleaners, polishes or abrasive materials, as these can damage the natural finish.

Is the lens glass or acrylic?

The lens is glass set within a steel rim. Glass provides clearer magnification than acrylic and resists scratching, but it is more fragile if dropped.
