Description

The Columbia is a 28cm tall sand timer built around a cylindrical glass tube containing white sand, held within an antique brass frame. Three turned brass legs support the glass tube at top and bottom, with decorative knurling on each leg and flat circular brass plates at the base and crown. The antique brass finish shows a darker patina that gives the piece an aged, heritage look compared to polished or brushed brass.

Designed as a decorative object rather than a precision timing instrument, the Columbia suits desks, bookcases and console tables where it provides visual interest through the falling sand motion. The glass tube diameter is approximately 50mm, and the sand takes around 30 minutes to pass from one chamber to the other when inverted. The three-leg construction gives the timer stability on flat surfaces without requiring a large footprint — the base diameter measures 9.5cm.

The turned detailing on the brass legs and the circular top and bottom plates give the piece a classical profile that references traditional maritime hourglasses and Victorian desk accessories. The antique brass patina darkens over time with handling and exposure, developing an individual character depending on placement and use. The glass tube is sealed at both ends, so the white sand remains contained and the timer can be inverted repeatedly.

Frequently Asked

How long does the sand take to fall?

The white sand takes approximately 30 minutes to pass from one chamber to the other. This is an estimate based on the glass tube dimensions — the Columbia is designed as a decorative piece rather than a calibrated timing instrument, so minor variation is expected.

Can the glass tube be refilled or opened?

No. The glass tube is permanently sealed at both ends to contain the sand. The timer is designed to be inverted and used as-is, not disassembled or refilled.

What causes the antique brass finish?

The antique brass finish is a deliberate patina applied during manufacture to give the metal a darker, aged appearance. Over time the finish may darken further with handling and exposure to air, which is characteristic of antique brass and not a defect.

Is the timer accurate enough for cooking or timed tasks?

The Columbia is designed as a decorative object, not a precision timer. While the sand takes approximately 30 minutes to fall, minor variation in timing can occur depending on temperature, humidity and how level the surface is. For accurate timing use a digital timer or stopwatch.
