Description

The Kichler Cobson is a 407mm-diameter natural brass pendant light with a wide bell shade that can be installed as either a pendant with adjustable drop or a semi-flush ceiling fitting. The shade features a smooth natural brass exterior and a dark antiqued interior that directs light downward, with a single E27 bulb fitting (sold separately) positioned inside the bell.

Designed for kitchens, dining rooms and utility spaces where focused downward light is needed, the Cobson suits worktops, dining tables and breakfast bars. As a pendant it adjusts between 239mm and 1244mm drop on installation, allowing positioning 700-900mm above a surface depending on ceiling height. As a semi-flush it sits 239mm from the ceiling, providing overhead light in rooms with lower ceiling heights of 2.2-2.4m where a full pendant drop would hang too low.

The natural brass finish is unlacquered and will develop a patina over time as the metal oxidises, shifting from bright gold-brass towards a darker, mottled antique tone. The dark antiqued interior of the shade reduces glare and hides the back of the metal from view when the fitting is seen from below. The stepped ceiling rose and rod-and-chain suspension give the fitting an American industrial warehouse aesthetic that pairs with exposed brick, reclaimed wood and raw concrete finishes.

The dual-mount capability means the same fitting can be used in different rooms with different ceiling conditions without needing separate product variants. A pendant configuration works in kitchens with 2.7m+ ceilings, while the semi-flush configuration suits hallways or utility rooms with 2.2-2.4m ceilings. The 407mm diameter provides enough visual presence for a single fitting over a small dining table or a pair spaced 800-1000mm apart over a kitchen island.

Can this be used as both a pendant and a semi-flush fitting?

Yes. The Cobson is supplied with both pendant rod suspension and semi-flush mounting hardware. During installation you choose which configuration to use based on your ceiling height and the amount of drop needed. Once installed in one configuration it would require re-fitting to switch to the other.

What bulb does it take?

The fitting takes a standard E27 Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a 6-10W warm-white LED bulb between 2700K and 3000K, or a vintage-style filament bulb for the retro industrial look.

Will the brass finish change over time?

Yes. Natural brass is unlacquered and will oxidise with exposure to air and moisture, developing a darker patina over months and years. This patina development is a feature of unlacquered brass. If you prefer to maintain the bright brass appearance, the fitting can be treated with a metal polish periodically.

What ceiling height is needed for pendant mode?

In pendant mode with the maximum 1244mm drop, the fitting works best in rooms with ceiling heights of 2.7m or above, allowing 700-900mm clearance above the surface being lit. For lower ceilings the drop can be shortened during installation or the fitting can be used in semi-flush mode instead.
