Description

The Belben is a 23cm square wooden noughts and crosses game with nine compartments divided by raised wooden dividers, each holding a turned three-dimensional playing piece — five spheres for noughts and four crosses. The board and all nine pieces are made from stained hardwood, giving consistent mid-brown tones across the set, and the box doubles as the playing surface and storage when closed.

Designed for coffee tables, office desks and family game collections, the Belben offers a tactile alternative to paper-and-pencil noughts and crosses. The 3D pieces sit in recessed compartments rather than lying flat, making them easier to grip and move for players of all ages. The box measures 23cm square by 6.5cm deep and weighs just under 1.2kg, substantial enough to feel built rather than flimsy but light enough to move between rooms or pack for travel.

The compartment grid is formed by interlocking wooden dividers mortised into the box base, creating nine equal cells. Each sphere and cross is hand-turned, so minor variations in grain and tone appear between pieces — a feature of natural hardwood rather than a defect. The stained finish protects the wood from casual handling while leaving the grain visible, and the box lid sits flush when closed to keep pieces secure during storage.

Frequently Asked

What wood is the game made from?

The game uses stained hardwood for both the box and playing pieces. The specific hardwood species varies by production batch but is typically rubberwood or similar plantation-grown hardwoods, chosen for durability and even grain. All pieces are stained to a consistent mid-brown tone.

Do the pieces stay in place when the box is moved?

The compartment dividers hold the pieces in their cells during play, but the box does not lock closed. If the game is being transported or stored on a shelf where it might tip, the lid should be secured separately or the pieces removed and wrapped.

Is it suitable for children?

The 3D pieces are easier for children to grip than flat counters, making the game accessible for younger players learning strategy. The spheres measure approximately 4cm diameter — large enough to avoid choking hazards for children over three years old, but adult supervision is recommended for younger children.

How is the wood maintained?

Wipe with a dry or barely-damp soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid soaking the wood or using spray cleaners, as these can lift the stain or damage the finish. A light application of furniture wax every few years will keep the wood conditioned.
