Description

The Knightsbridge 20AX 1-gang DP toggle switch is a modular switch insert designed to clip into Grid frames as part of a custom-built faceplate. The toggle lever switches at 20AX rating on 230V, making it suitable for high-draw circuits including water heaters, large lighting loads and commercial appliances where standard 10AX switches are under-rated.

Designed for use within Knightsbridge's Grid system, this module fits any Grid frame (sold separately) and can be combined with other Grid modules — sockets, dimmers, data ports — to create bespoke multi-function faceplates. The double pole (DP) switching isolates both live and neutral lines when the toggle is in the off position, providing complete circuit isolation where required by regulations or where additional safety is needed for appliances connected to unfused spurs.

The matt black finish provides a flat, non-reflective surface that integrates cleanly into contemporary, industrial and monochrome interiors. The module clips into the Grid frame from the front without tools, and the frame itself fixes to a standard UK back box with a minimum 25mm depth. The toggle lever has a defined click action at both positions, making the on/off state clear by feel as well as by sight.

Frequently Asked

What is the Grid system and what frame do I need?

Knightsbridge's Grid system allows you to build custom faceplates by combining individual modules (switches, sockets, dimmers, data ports) in a metal frame. You purchase the modules and frame separately, then clip the modules into the frame from the front. Frames are available in 1, 2, 3 and 4-gang configurations and various finishes to match this module.

What does 20AX mean and when is it needed?

20AX means the switch is rated at 20 amps for resistive loads on 230V AC, which translates to 4,600W. This higher rating is required for circuits controlling water heaters, large commercial lighting arrays, and appliances where a standard 10AX switch would be under-rated. For typical domestic lighting circuits a 10AX module is sufficient.

What does double pole (DP) switching do?

Double pole switching isolates both the live and neutral conductors when the switch is in the off position, providing complete circuit isolation. This is required by regulations in certain installations (e.g. water heaters, some commercial kitchens) and is generally safer than single-pole switching for appliances connected to unfused spurs.

Can this be used as a standalone switch?

No. This is a module designed to clip into a Knightsbridge Grid frame. The frame is what fixes to the back box and provides the faceplate. Both the module and a compatible frame are required for a working installation.
