Description

The Knightsbridge SN1400 is a single-gang 25mm pattress box moulded from white thermoset resin with a square edge profile. The box measures 86mm x 86mm across the faceplate mounting points and projects 30mm from the wall, providing 25mm of internal depth for cable and terminal accommodation behind the accessory faceplate.

Designed for surface-mounting single-gang wiring accessories where flush mounting into plasterboard or masonry is not possible, the pattress box suits both residential retrofit and commercial installation. The square edge profile mates directly with Knightsbridge's Square Edge (SN) series of switches, sockets and connection units, giving a clean finish where the accessory plate meets the box edge. The box is also compatible with standard UK single-gang accessories from other manufacturers.

The thermoset resin construction resists impact, heat and UV degradation better than standard ABS plastic, and the white finish is moulded through the material rather than applied as a coating. The box has been tested to ISO 22196:2011 for anti-microbial properties and carries an IP20 rating for indoor dry-location use. Two brass threaded inserts accept M3.5 fixing screws for the accessory faceplate, and the rear of the box has multiple knock-out points for cable entry from any direction.

What's the difference between a pattress box and a back box?

A pattress box surface-mounts onto the wall and the accessory fixes to the front of it, leaving the box visible behind the faceplate edges. A back box sinks into the wall cavity so only the accessory faceplate is visible. This pattress box is used where flush mounting is not possible or not preferred.

Does this box need an earth terminal?

No. The box is non-metallic thermoset resin and does not require earthing. Earth continuity is maintained through the accessory's own earth terminal when metal faceplates are used.

Is it compatible with screwless plates?

Yes. Knightsbridge screwless accessories use a separate metal sub-frame that fixes to the pattress box with screws, and the cover plate clips onto that sub-frame. This box accepts both screw-fixed and screwless accessories in the SN range.

How many cables can fit inside?

The 25mm internal depth accommodates typical UK twin-and-earth cable runs for single accessories. For accessories drawing high current or needing multiple cable terminations, a 35mm or 47mm deeper box may be required to avoid cable compression.
