Choice Plus Electronic Room Thermostat Frost Protection - Black

The Sangamo Choice Plus is an electronic room thermostat designed for frost protection, with a temperature set range of -5°C to 30°C and a 10A switching capacity at 240V AC. The thermostat uses an electronic sensor rather than a mechanical bimetallic strip, providing more accurate and responsive temperature control in unheated spaces, plant rooms, garages, outbuildings and vacant properties where frost damage is a risk.

The thermostat fits a standard UK single-gang back box and controls heating systems by switching on when the room temperature falls below the set point and switching off when it rises above it. The temperature swing can be adjusted between 0.5°C and 1°C depending on how tightly you need to hold the temperature — narrower swings mean more frequent switching but tighter control, while wider swings reduce switching frequency but allow slightly more temperature variation.

The black faceplate measures 90mm × 92mm and includes a tamper-resistant cover secured with a security Torx screw, making it suitable for commercial, rental and multi-occupancy buildings where unauthorised adjustment needs to be prevented. The 10A rating handles most domestic and light commercial heating loads including electric heaters, fan convectors and small boiler systems.

What's the difference between 0.5°C and 1°C temperature swing?

The temperature swing is the hysteresis — the gap between switch-on and switch-off temperatures. A 0.5°C swing gives tighter control with more frequent switching, while a 1°C swing allows more tolerance and reduces how often the relay operates. Choose based on whether you need precise temperature holding or prefer to minimise wear on the heating system's contactor.

Can I use this to control a boiler?

Yes, provided the boiler's switching circuit draws no more than 10A at 240V AC. Most domestic boilers use low-current switching circuits well within this rating, but check your boiler's specification or installation manual to confirm compatibility.

How do I override the tamper-resistant cover?

The cover is secured with a security Torx screw. You will need a Torx driver (size not specified in the data sheet — check the installation manual) to remove the cover and access the temperature dial. Once adjusted, refit the cover to prevent unauthorised changes.

What back box depth is required?

The thermostat fits a standard UK single-gang back box. A 25mm minimum depth is typical for this type of control, but consult the installation manual in the Downloads tab for the exact clearance requirement.
