Description

The Mercury 1-gang 25mm surface back box is a white moulded plastic housing designed to sit on the wall surface rather than being recessed, allowing switches, sockets and other single-gang faceplates to be fitted where flush installation is not possible. The box includes multiple moulded knockouts for cable entry from the top, bottom, sides and rear, and two brass fixing lugs for securing the faceplate.

Designed for residential, commercial and light industrial applications where surface wiring is the preferred or only option, the box suits solid walls where chasing out is impractical, surface-run conduit installations, workshops, garages and utility rooms. The 25mm depth accommodates standard switches and sockets without deep terminal blocks. The box mounts directly to the wall with screws through the rear base plate, or can be fixed to trunking or cable management systems.

The white finish blends with white walls and white faceplates for a low-profile appearance, though the box itself remains visible as a surface-mounted fitting. The moulded plastic construction is lightweight and resistant to impact, and the box carries BS EN60670-1 certification for use with standard UK electrical accessories rated up to 13A.

Frequently Asked

What is a surface box used for?

A surface box sits on the wall surface rather than being recessed into it, allowing electrical faceplates to be fitted where cutting into the wall is not possible or desirable. Common applications include solid walls, tiled surfaces, workshops and garages.

What depth of faceplate does it take?

The 25mm depth suits standard switches and sockets with shallow terminal blocks. Deep modules or those requiring more wiring space may need a 35mm or 47mm surface box instead.

How many cable entries does it have?

The box includes multiple moulded knockouts on the top, bottom, sides and rear. Knockouts are removed by pushing through with a screwdriver or knife where cable entry is needed.

Is it compatible with screwless faceplates?

Yes. The box provides standard fixing lugs that accept both screw-fixed and screwless cover plates designed for single-gang mounting.
