Frequently Asked Questions

What does the IP rating mean for outdoor use?

The IP rating shows how well a unit resists dust and water. This range spans IP54, IP55 and IP66, with IP66 giving the strongest protection against heavy rain and powerful water jets. For exposed garden walls and fully open positions, the IP66 sockets and switches are the safer pick.

Which outdoor sockets have RCD protection?

Some two-gang 13A sockets include built-in RCD protection rated Type A 30mA, which cuts power quickly if it detects a fault. This is worth having for tools, mowers and other equipment used outdoors. The product title and tags state whether a given socket carries RCD protection.

Can I fit an outdoor socket myself?

These connect to fixed mains wiring outdoors, where damp and earthing matter, so we recommend using a qualified electrician for installation. They can confirm the right protection for the circuit, mount the unit securely and make sure the weatherproof seal is intact so the IP rating holds up.

What is the difference between a 13A socket and a 20AX switch here?

The 13A units are sockets you plug equipment into outdoors. The 20AX items are switches, including one and two gang, two-way and retractive types, used to control outdoor lighting or other circuits. The switches here are single-pole, with one retractive model carrying a blue LED indicator. Several of the switched sockets and the fused spur are double-pole with neon indicators so you can see at a glance when they are live.

Are there smart or remote-controlled options?

Yes. The range includes smart IP66 sockets and remote-controlled sockets and switch boxes, including a five-gang remote switch box, so you can turn garden lighting or equipment on and off without going outside. These keep the same weatherproof polycarbonate housing as the standard models.
