Description
The Winchfield is a 36cm picture light with a cylindrical aged brass shade housing two E14 bulbs (sold separately), mounted on an adjustable arm that allows the light to be angled towards the artwork surface. The rectangular backplate fixes to the wall above the frame, and the arm extends forward to position the shade 10-15cm in front of the wall, directing light downwards across the canvas or print.
Designed for medium-sized artwork up to 90cm wide, the Winchfield works best when mounted 15-20cm above the top edge of the frame, with the light angled to avoid glare on glazed prints while illuminating the full width of the piece. The two-bulb configuration provides balanced coverage across landscape-oriented paintings, large photographs and framed prints in hallways, living rooms and dining rooms. The adjustable arm allows the angle to be set during installation and adjusted later if the artwork changes.
The aged brass finish is a mid-tone brass with a slightly darkened patina, avoiding the high reflectivity of polished brass while retaining warmth under both daylight and artificial light. The heavy steel frame gives the fitting a 1.2kg presence that stays in position once the arm is set. The cylindrical shade hides the bulbs from direct view when standing in front of the artwork, reducing glare and keeping attention on the illuminated piece rather than the light source.
The Winchfield suits both traditional oil paintings in ornate frames and contemporary prints in simpler mounts, functioning as a neutral accent that directs attention to the artwork rather than competing with it. The aged brass pairs well with gold-leaf frames, dark wood frames and black metal frames, and the warm tone softens the contrast against white or pale-coloured walls.
Frequently Asked
What bulbs does it take?
The Winchfield takes two E14 (small Edison screw) bulbs up to 40W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K for consistent colour rendering on artwork.
What size artwork does it suit?
The 36cm shade width suits medium-sized frames between 60cm and 90cm wide. For smaller artwork under 60cm wide, a single-bulb picture light provides better proportional coverage. For large artwork over 100cm wide, two Winchfield lights spaced evenly across the width give more balanced illumination.
How is the arm adjusted?
The arm rotates on a brass-bushed joint between the backplate and the extending arm. The joint can be tightened with an Allen key once the desired angle is set, preventing the arm from drooping under the weight of the shade over time.
Can it be used on glazed prints?
Yes, but the angle needs careful setting to avoid reflections bouncing off the glass back towards the viewer. Mount the light slightly higher above the frame (20-25cm rather than 15cm) and angle the shade more steeply downwards to reduce glare on glazed surfaces.
