Description

The St Martins is a single-lamp outdoor wall light cast in solid brass with a hand-applied verdigris patina that mimics the natural oxidation of copper exposed to weather over decades. The lantern houses a single E27 bulb (sold separately) behind clear glass panels set in a tapered frame, with a stepped top section and a flat back plate for wall mounting. The verdigris finish shows tonal variation between pale green, blue-green and darker copper tones depending on how the patina has settled during the hand-finishing process.

Designed for entrance porches, porch canopies, and sheltered outdoor walls on period and traditional properties, the St Martins carries an IP44 rating for protection against solid objects over 1mm and water splashes from any direction. This makes it suitable for covered outdoor locations but not for fully exposed positions subject to driving rain or direct water jets. The 80mm projection from the wall keeps the lantern clear of most rendered or brick surfaces, while the 305mm height suits standard door-frame proportions on Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian frontages.

The solid brass construction gives the fitting a substantial 1.2kg weight and will continue to age naturally outdoors, developing further patina variation over time. The E27 lampholder accepts standard Edison screw bulbs up to 60W, allowing the user to choose between warm-white LED filament bulbs for a heritage look or frosted LED bulbs for more diffused light. Elstead Lighting supplies the St Martins with a lifetime guarantee covering manufacturing defects in the brass casting and finish application.

Frequently Asked

What does IP44 mean and where can this light be used?

IP44 provides protection against solid objects over 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The St Martins can be installed on covered porches, entrance canopies and sheltered outdoor walls, but should not be mounted in fully exposed positions subject to driving rain or direct water jets.

What bulb does it take?

The light takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W, sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the heritage aesthetic.

Will the verdigris finish continue to change over time?

Yes. The hand-applied verdigris patina will continue to age naturally when exposed to outdoor conditions, developing further tonal variation. This is a characteristic of solid brass with a living finish, not a defect.

What fixing method is used?

The flat back plate has mounting holes for wall fixings (screws and plugs not included). The plate should be fixed to a solid masonry or timber surface with appropriate fixings for the substrate, and the electrical connection should be made by a qualified electrician in accordance with UK wiring regulations.
