Description
The Shoal is a 481mm diameter flush ceiling light built around a drum of stacked crystal rods arranged in horizontal tiers around four E27 bulb fittings, enclosed within a polished nickel frame. The fitting sits 231mm from the ceiling surface, making it suitable for rooms with ceiling heights between 2.1m and 2.4m where a pendant would hang too low.
Designed for bedrooms, hallways, and living rooms where decorative lighting is needed but vertical clearance is limited, the Shoal combines the prismatic light refraction of crystal with the compact format of a flush mount. The four E27 fittings (bulbs sold separately) sit inside the crystal drum, so light passes through multiple layers of faceted glass before reaching the room, creating dispersed rainbow reflections on walls and ceilings when the fitting is lit.
Each tier of crystal rods is pinned to vertical chrome struts running between the polished nickel top and bottom plates, creating a structured cage rather than loose hanging droplets. This means the crystals stay aligned and the fitting can withstand ceiling vibration better than a traditional chandelier. The polished nickel finish reflects ambient light in the room even when the fitting is switched off, giving the Shoal a presence during daylight hours that matt or brushed finishes lack.
The fitting accepts standard E27 LED, halogen or decorative filament bulbs up to 60W per socket. Most users pair the Shoal with clear or amber-tinted LED filament bulbs in globe or candle shapes to maintain visibility of the light source through the crystal layers, though frosted bulbs work where softer diffusion is preferred.

Frequently Asked
What bulbs work best with the Shoal?
The fitting takes four E27 bulbs up to 60W each, sold separately. Clear LED filament bulbs in globe or candle shapes are popular because the light source remains visible through the crystal tiers, but frosted bulbs provide softer diffusion if preferred. Warm white (2700K-3000K) works well for living spaces.
Is it suitable for low ceilings?
Yes. At 231mm projection from the ceiling, the Shoal is designed specifically for rooms where ceiling height is limited. It works comfortably in rooms with 2.1m-2.4m ceilings where a pendant would sit too low or create head clearance issues.
How are the crystals secured?
The crystal rods are stacked in horizontal tiers and pinned to vertical chrome struts running between the top and bottom nickel plates. This creates a structured drum rather than loose hanging droplets, so the crystals stay aligned and the fitting tolerates ceiling vibration better than traditional chandeliers.
How is the polished nickel maintained?
Polished nickel can be cleaned with a soft microfibre cloth and warm water if needed. For fingerprints or smudges, a small amount of glass cleaner on the cloth works, but avoid spraying directly onto the fitting. The crystals can be wiped individually with a damp cloth when the power is off.
