Description

The Roots is a 20cm diameter pendant light built from 5-layer plywood slats arranged in a flared dome cage, with a matt black metal canopy and adjustable fabric-wrapped cable. The plywood slats are cut and assembled to form vertical ribs that curve outward from the narrow top, creating a lantern-like cage around a single E27 bulb fitting. The natural beige finish of the plywood shows the layered wood grain texture, and a protective lacquer coating preserves the colour and surface.

Designed for kitchens, dining areas, hallways and bedrooms, the Roots works as solo task lighting above a small table or breakfast bar, or in multiples above a longer dining table or kitchen island. The adjustable cable drop extends from 43.5cm to 333.5cm, allowing installation in both standard 2.4m ceiling heights and double-height spaces. The slotted plywood cage filters the bulb light into vertical patterns on walls and ceilings, so the fitting works as both ambient and decorative light depending on bulb choice.

The 5-layer plywood construction gives the shade rigidity without excessive weight, and the individual slats can be seen more clearly when the fitting is lit. The matt black metal hardware at the canopy and cable strain relief contrasts with the pale wood tone, and the fabric cable covering adds a tactile detail compared to standard PVC flex. The IP20 rating restricts use to dry indoor rooms only.

The Roots uses a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to show the plywood grain and create patterned light through the slats.

Can the cable length be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The fabric-wrapped cable is adjustable between 43.5cm and 333.5cm drop. The excess cable is concealed within the ceiling canopy once the desired drop height is set during installation.

Is it suitable for bathrooms or outdoor use?

No. The IP20 rating means the fitting is designed for dry indoor rooms only. It cannot be used in bathrooms, kitchens directly above hobs or sinks where steam is present, or outdoors.

How many pendants are needed above a dining table?

For a small table (up to 120cm), one Roots pendant centred above the table works well. For longer tables or kitchen islands (150cm+), two or three Roots pendants spaced evenly along the length provide better coverage and visual balance.
