Description

The Planet is a 12cm diameter LED surface downlight with a white aluminium cylindrical body that mounts directly to the ceiling surface without recessing. An integrated 16W LED inside the drum delivers warm 3000K light through two independent circuits: a primary downward-facing light for task and ambient illumination, and a secondary backlight that casts a soft upward glow onto the ceiling.

The dual-circuit design operates in three modes controlled by a standard wall switch. A single switch press activates the primary downlight only, a second press switches to backlight only, and a third press runs both circuits simultaneously for maximum output. This allows the fitting to serve as main room lighting, accent lighting, or a combination depending on time of day and room use. The 92mm projection from the ceiling makes it suitable for rooms with low ceilings where recessed downlights cannot be installed due to shallow ceiling voids.

The white powder-coated aluminium body measures 120mm diameter and sits flush against plasterboard or solid ceilings on a standard ceiling rose or junction box connection. The IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations away from bathrooms and kitchens. The 16W LED draws approximately 0.07A at 230V mains and provides sufficient light output for rooms up to approximately 12-15m² when used as primary lighting, or as supplementary lighting in larger open-plan spaces.

The Maytoni Planet range includes multiple sizes and finishes, allowing the same design language to be carried across different room scales and interior colour schemes. The integrated LED has a rated lifespan of 30,000+ hours under typical domestic use, equating to approximately 10-15 years before replacement of the entire fitting is needed.

How does the dual-mode switching work?

The Planet uses a standard wall switch to cycle through three modes: downlight only, backlight only, or both circuits together. Each press of the switch advances to the next mode in sequence. No special dimmer or control panel is required.

Can this be used in bathrooms or kitchens?

No. The IP20 rating means the fitting is not protected against moisture or steam and should only be installed in dry indoor locations such as living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and dining areas.

What ceiling void depth is needed?

None. This is a surface-mounted fitting that sits on top of the ceiling rather than recessing into it, making it suitable for solid ceilings or shallow ceiling voids where recessed downlights cannot fit.

Is the LED replaceable?

No. The LED is integrated into the fitting and is not user-replaceable. When the LED reaches end of life after 30,000+ hours, the entire fitting is replaced rather than just the lamp.
