Description
The Old Bailey is a 375mm outdoor wall lantern with a solid brass frame finished in aged brass, housing two E27 bulb holders behind clear glass panels on three sides. The design references pre-Georgian British coach lanterns, with a pyramidal roof section, rectangular lantern body and a lacquered brass finish that protects the metal against coastal air and rain exposure. The lantern carries an IP44 rating for outdoor use on walls sheltered from direct water jets.
Designed for porch entrances, courtyard walls and beside front doors on period and country properties, the Old Bailey provides functional illumination while matching the architectural character of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes. The two E27 bulbs (sold separately) can be LED filament, halogen or traditional incandescent, giving flexibility to match the warmth and light output to the entrance width and path length. The clear glass allows light to project outwards and downwards without diffusion, suitable for lighting steps or identifying house numbers.
The aged brass finish is applied by hand to each fitting, giving a softened gold tone with darker oxidation in recesses and corners that mimics decades of natural weathering. The finish is then lacquered to slow further tarnishing, though some additional patina will develop in coastal or high-humidity locations over years of exposure. The lantern measures 260mm wide and projects 150mm from the wall once the backplate is fixed, fitting typical brick piers and rendered walls without overwhelming smaller porches. The solid brass construction gives the fitting a 2.8kg weight that requires secure fixing to masonry or studwork.

Frequently Asked
What bulbs does it take?
The Old Bailey takes two E27 (Edison screw) bulbs up to 60W each, sold separately. Most users fit warm-white LED filament bulbs at 4-6W and 2200K-2700K to match the period character of the brass and glass.
Is it suitable for coastal locations?
The IP44 rating and lacquered brass finish make the Old Bailey suitable for exterior walls in coastal areas, though the aged brass will develop additional patina faster in salty air than in inland locations. This is a natural characteristic of solid brass outdoor fittings.
How is the aged brass finish maintained?
The lacquer coating slows tarnishing but does not prevent it entirely. Wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth to remove dust and salt deposits. Avoid metal polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip the lacquer and accelerate oxidation.
What wall fixing method is needed?
The fitting weighs 2.8kg and requires masonry fixings (wall plugs and screws) into brick, stone or rendered blockwork, or screws into studwork behind cladding. The backplate has pre-drilled fixing holes and conceals the cable entry point once mounted.
