Description
The Old Bailey is a solid brass outdoor wall lantern with an aged brass finish, clear glass panels on four sides and a single E27 bulb fitting inside. The lantern structure replicates pre-Georgian coach lamp proportions, with a rectangular frame, stepped canopy and flat base that mounts directly to an external wall. The aged brass finish shows darker patination in recesses and around edges, giving the appearance of naturally weathered metal.
Designed for IP44-rated outdoor installation, the lantern suits front door porches, covered entryways, garden walls and pergola posts where traditional architectural detailing is present or desired. The clear glass panels allow light to project in all directions from the bulb, casting even illumination onto adjacent walls and pathways. The 210mm width and 280mm height scale the fitting for single-storey doorways and porch positions where a larger lantern would dominate.
Each lantern is hand-crafted from solid brass sheet and rod, then aged through chemical treatment and sealed with a lacquer coating to stabilise the patina and resist further tarnishing. The brass construction resists corrosion in coastal and damp environments better than plated steel alternatives. The fitting accepts any standard E27 LED, halogen or filament bulb up to 60W (sold separately), allowing control over colour temperature and brightness to match the surrounding architecture.

Frequently Asked
What IP rating does it carry?
The Old Bailey is IP44-rated, meaning it's protected against solid objects over 1mm and water splashes from any direction. It's suitable for covered outdoor positions such as porches, door canopies and sheltered wall locations, but not for fully exposed positions subject to driving rain.
What bulb does it take?
The lantern takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most installations use a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the aged brass finish and traditional styling.
Will the aged brass finish change over time?
The finish is chemically aged then sealed with lacquer to stabilise the patina. In covered positions the finish remains stable. In exposed positions subject to rain and coastal air, the lacquer may wear over several years and allow further natural ageing, which is consistent with the period aesthetic the design replicates.
How is it mounted?
The lantern mounts directly to a wall via a flat backplate with two or three fixing points. The electrical connection is made inside the backplate, and the lantern body then fixes over the top. Installation requires connection to mains outdoor-rated cabling and should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
