Description

The Messina is a 43cm semi-flush ceiling light built around a cylindrical natural linen shade wrapped in a gold-finished metal frame of geometric hexagonal patterns. Three E27 bulbs (sold separately) sit inside the shade, with light diffused through both the linen weave and a frosted glass base panel that distributes illumination downwards and outwards into the room.

Designed for rooms with ceiling heights between 2.3m and 2.6m where a pendant would hang too low, the Messina mounts 19cm below the ceiling rose, placing the shade close enough to the ceiling to avoid head clearance issues in hallways, bedrooms and living rooms. The semi-flush format provides ambient room lighting without the visual weight of a flush-mount disc. The 43cm diameter suits rooms of 12-18 square metres, typically bedrooms, dining rooms and entrance halls.

The geometric metal framework is die-cast and finished in a warm gold tone that reads as soft yellow-gold under daylight and deeper amber-gold under evening artificial light. The natural linen shade beneath the frame shows a visible weave texture and sits inside rather than outside the metal structure, so the hexagonal pattern forms a cage around the fabric cylinder. The frosted glass diffuser at the base prevents direct view of the bulbs from below and softens downlight into a glow rather than defined shadows.

Maytoni manufactures the Messina in Spain, using metal frames powder-coated after fabrication and linen shades cut and stitched to fit the internal frame diameter. The fixture weighs approximately 2kg when fitted with three standard LED bulbs, requiring a ceiling rose capable of supporting that load on the standard UK hook-and-chain mounting system.

The Messina takes three E27 (Edison screw) bulbs up to 60W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED bulbs between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K for ambient bedroom or living room lighting.

What ceiling height does it suit?

The fixture projects 19cm below the ceiling rose. It works best in rooms with ceiling heights between 2.3m and 2.6m, where a pendant would sit too low but a flush-mount would feel visually heavy. In taller rooms the semi-flush format can look compressed against the ceiling.

Can it be used in bathrooms?

No. The IP20 rating means the Messina is suitable only for dry indoor locations. It cannot be used in bathrooms, kitchens directly above hobs, or any area where moisture or steam is present.

How is the linen shade cleaned?

The natural linen shade attracts dust over time. Use a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner set to low suction, or a dry microfibre cloth. Do not use water or fabric cleaners on the linen as it may stain or shrink the weave.
