Description

The Lumos is a 45mm diameter optical lens designed to narrow the beam angle of compatible downlight fittings to 20°, creating a focused spot of light rather than the wider flood pattern most downlights produce. The lens is manufactured by Ideal Lux in transparent high-grade optical plastic, designed to slot into the aperture of a recessed downlight and sit in front of the lamp or LED source.

Used in galleries, retail display, hospitality and residential settings where accent lighting is needed to highlight artwork, architectural features, shelving or table surfaces without spilling light onto surrounding walls. The 20° beam creates a concentrated pool of light approximately 350mm in diameter from a ceiling height of 2.4m, making it effective for drawing visual attention to a specific object or area. The lens fits most 50mm aperture downlights including many GU10 and MR16 fittings.

The optical plastic construction maintains light transmission while reducing scatter and glare compared to an unfiltered downlight beam. The 45mm outer diameter allows the lens to clip or press-fit into the downlight bezel depending on the specific fitting design. The transparent finish means the lens itself is not visible when looking up at the ceiling from typical viewing angles, so the fitting retains a clean recessed appearance.

Frequently Asked

What downlight fittings is this lens compatible with?

The 45mm diameter suits most standard 50mm aperture recessed downlights, including many GU10 and MR16 fittings. Check the aperture diameter of your existing downlight before ordering — the lens needs to slot into the bezel at the front of the fitting.

How wide is the light pool at typical ceiling height?

At a 2.4m ceiling height, the 20° beam angle produces a focused pool of light approximately 350mm in diameter. At 3m ceiling height, this increases to around 440mm. The beam is noticeably narrower and more concentrated than a standard downlight.

Does the lens reduce light output?

The optical plastic has high transmission, so brightness reduction is minimal. Some light is absorbed or reflected by any lens, but the loss is typically less than 10% of the downlight's output. The narrower beam concentrates the remaining light into a smaller area, often making the illuminated surface appear brighter than with an unfocused beam.

Can it be used with dimmable downlights?

Yes. The lens is a passive optical component and does not affect dimming. If the downlight itself is dimmable, it remains dimmable with the lens fitted.
