Description
The Lambeth Palace is a 270mm outdoor wall lantern built from solid brass with an aged brass finish and clear glass panes on three sides. A single E27 bulb (sold separately, up to 60W) sits inside a brass socket cup behind the glass, with light projecting outward and downward from the lantern box. The brass canopy mounts directly to exterior walls, with the lantern projecting 130mm from the mounting surface.
Designed for porches, front doors, courtyard walls and covered garden entrances, the Lambeth Palace carries an IP44 rating that protects the internal components from rain splash and dust ingress when mounted under a soffit or porch roof. The hinged door on the front face opens on brass pin-hinges, allowing access to change the bulb without removing the entire fitting from the wall. The door latches closed with a simple clasp.
The aged brass finish shows natural darkening and patina variation typical of non-lacquered brass exposed to outdoor conditions, giving the fitting a pre-weathered character that deepens over time. The proportions follow late 17th and early 18th century British street lantern designs, with a tapered chimney top pierced with cross-pattern ventilation slots to dissipate heat. The clear glass is held in place by brass frames soldered to the main body, with no plastic or composite components visible.
Elstead Lighting manufactures this lantern with a lifetime guarantee covering material and manufacturing defects. The 180mm width suits standard door surrounds and gate posts without overwhelming narrow alcoves or recessed porches.

Frequently Asked
What IP rating does it carry and where can it be installed?
The Lambeth Palace is rated IP44, meaning it is protected from solid objects larger than 1mm and from water splashing from any direction. It is suitable for installation under porches, soffits, covered entrances and other locations where it is sheltered from direct prolonged rain exposure. It is not rated for fully exposed positions with no overhead protection.
What bulb does it take?
The lantern takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to match the traditional aesthetic.
How is the bulb changed?
The front face of the lantern is a hinged door held closed by a small brass clasp. Lift the clasp and swing the door open on its brass pin-hinges to access the bulb socket inside. This allows bulb changes without disconnecting the fitting from the wall.
Will the brass finish change over time?
Yes. The aged brass finish will continue to darken and develop natural patina variation when exposed to outdoor conditions. This is intentional and part of the pre-Georgian design character. If you prefer to preserve the initial finish tone, occasional cleaning with a brass polish will slow the natural ageing process.
