Description
The Hoop Medium is an 8.5cm diameter surface-mounted downlight in white-painted aluminium and plastic, designed to fit ceilings where recessed installation is not possible. The cylindrical body projects 9.6cm below the ceiling plane and houses a GX53 bulb base rated for up to 15W. The GX53 bulb (sold separately) is a low-profile twist-and-lock format that sits flush within the cylinder, directing light downward through a frosted diffuser at the aperture.
Designed for rooms with shallow ceiling voids, solid concrete ceilings, or retrofit installations where cutting a recess is not practical, the Hoop mounts directly to the ceiling surface via a back plate. The downlight suits hallways, kitchens, bathrooms (dry zones only — IP20 rated), utility rooms and bedrooms needing focused overhead light without a pendant drop. The 8.5cm aperture provides a concentrated beam that works well in multiples spaced 1-1.5m apart for even coverage.
The white finish on the aluminium body is a smooth matte paint that resists yellowing under heat from the bulb. The combined aluminium and plastic construction keeps the unit lightweight at approximately 150g, allowing it to be mounted on plasterboard ceilings with standard fixings. The GX53 base accepts LED, halogen or compact fluorescent bulbs, giving flexibility to choose the colour temperature and brightness that suits the space.

Frequently Asked
What bulb does the Hoop take?
The downlight takes a GX53 bulb up to 15W. GX53 is a twist-and-lock base format with a low-profile disc shape that sits flush within the cylinder. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED GX53 between 7-11W and 2700K-3000K.
Can it be used in bathrooms?
The IP20 rating means the Hoop is suitable for dry indoor areas only. It can be used in bathrooms outside zones 0, 1 and 2 (typically 60cm+ away from showers, baths and basins). For zones requiring splash protection, choose a downlight rated IP44 or higher.
What ceiling depth is needed?
The Hoop is a surface-mounted downlight designed for ceilings with shallow or no void space. It mounts directly to the ceiling surface via a back plate and projects 9.6cm below the ceiling line. No ceiling void is required.
How is it wired?
The downlight connects to mains AC 220-240V via a terminal block inside the back plate. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with BS 7671 wiring regulations. The Product Manual (Downloads tab) contains detailed wiring diagrams.
