Holborn 2 Light Outdoor Wall Light - Verdigris

The Holborn is a 2 light outdoor wall lantern built from solid brass with a verdigris finish that replicates the natural patina of weathered copper. The rectangular box frame encloses two E14 candle bulbs (sold separately) behind clear glass panels on all four sides, with decorative dentil moulding across the top and a stepped plinth at the base. The lantern projects approximately 150mm from the wall and mounts via a flat backplate.

Designed for covered outdoor positions such as porches, front doorways, side entrances and covered patios, the Holborn carries an IP44 rating providing protection from solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The rating makes it suitable for positions under eaves or canopies where the fitting has some shelter from direct rainfall. The clear glass panels allow full light transmission in all directions, providing functional illumination across doorsteps and entrance paths while the lantern itself acts as a visible marker for the doorway after dark.

The verdigris finish starts as solid brass that has been treated to develop the characteristic blue-green oxidised surface seen on aged copper roofing and statuary. The finish shows tonal variation across the surface, with darker grey-green accumulating in recesses and brighter turquoise highlighting raised edges and corners. This creates the appearance of a fitting that has weathered naturally over decades rather than one freshly installed. The Georgian-influenced proportions and dentil detailing suit period properties from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as contemporary builds designed to reference classical architecture.

The solid brass construction means the fitting has substantial weight and durability compared to aluminium or steel equivalents. Brass does not rust, though the verdigris patina will continue to develop and darken over time if exposed to moisture and air. The two-bulb configuration gives enough brightness for a standard residential doorway without the glare of higher-output LED floodlights.

What bulbs does the Holborn take?

The lantern takes two E14 small Edison screw bulbs, sold separately. Most users fit warm-white LED candle bulbs at 4-6W equivalent to 30-40W incandescent output. The clear glass does not diffuse the bulb filament, so decorative filament-style LEDs work well here.

Can this be used in fully exposed outdoor positions?

The IP44 rating provides splash protection, making the Holborn suitable for covered positions such as porches and doorways under eaves. For fully exposed walls with no overhead shelter, an IP65-rated fitting would be more appropriate.

Yes. The verdigris patina on solid brass is a living finish that will darken and develop further texture when exposed to moisture and air. This is characteristic of the material and contributes to the aged, period appearance.
