Description
The Holborn is a 310mm outdoor wall lantern with a Georgian-style brass frame finished in dark bronze, housing a single E14 bulb behind clear glass panels. The solid brass construction resists corrosion in exposed coastal and garden environments, while the IP44 rating protects the lamp holder and internal wiring from rain and splashing water.
Designed for porches, side entrances, garden walls and patio areas, the lantern mounts on a short 110mm bracket that holds the light slightly away from the wall surface, casting both downward and sideward illumination. The clear glass allows the bulb silhouette to be visible when lit, making decorative filament E14 candle bulbs a common pairing. The 40W maximum rating accommodates both LED and traditional incandescent candle bulbs (sold separately).
The dark bronze finish is applied over solid brass, so the base metal beneath remains corrosion-resistant even where the surface patinas over time in salt air or polluted environments. The vertical rectangular proportions and dentil-style moulding along the top edge reference Georgian and Regency door lanterns, suiting period properties, traditionally-styled new builds, and contemporary homes where a heritage aesthetic is preferred. Elstead backs the Holborn with a lifetime guarantee on manufacturing defects.

Frequently Asked
What does the IP44 rating mean for outdoor use?
IP44 indicates the lantern is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm (dust and small debris) and splashing water from any direction. This makes it suitable for exposed porches, garden walls and patio areas where rain and weather contact the fitting, but not for positions where the lantern would be submerged or subject to direct high-pressure water jets.
What type of bulb does it take?
The lantern takes a single E14 small Edison screw bulb up to 40W. E14 candle bulbs (both LED and filament) are commonly used. The clear glass panels make decorative filament candle bulbs particularly effective, as the bulb shape remains visible when lit. Bulbs are sold separately.
How is the dark bronze finish maintained outdoors?
The dark bronze finish is applied over solid brass, so the base metal resists corrosion even where the surface patinas. For areas with salt air or pollution, occasional wiping with a damp cloth removes surface deposits. The finish will develop a natural patina over time — this is a characteristic of brass outdoor fittings and does not affect structural integrity.
What wall surface is needed for mounting?
The lantern mounts on a standard back plate fixed to the wall with screws and rawl plugs (not supplied). Brick, stone, rendered masonry and exterior-grade timber are all suitable. The 110mm projection means the lantern sits slightly proud of the wall, so installation on a recessed area may reduce the effective throw of light.
