Description
The Helsingor is a 305mm pedestal light with a PIR motion sensor, built around a cylindrical black stem and a maritime-style lantern housing with clear glass panels. The light sits on a circular base plate suitable for brick pillars, gate posts and driveway entrances, and takes a single E27 bulb up to 60W (sold separately). The IP44 rating provides protection against dust and water splashes from any direction.
The PIR sensor detects movement within its field and automatically switches the light on, then off again after a set period. This makes the fitting useful for driveways, front paths, side gates and patio entrances where light is only needed when someone approaches. The sensor typically detects movement from people and larger animals within a 5-10m range depending on installation height and angle, though exact detection zones depend on mounting position and surrounding obstructions.
The matt black finish runs across the metalwork from the base plate through to the tiered top cap, with three horizontal shade rings stepping down above the glass enclosure. The clear glass allows light to spread laterally across paths and driveways rather than casting it all downward, which suits positions where the fitting acts as a wayfinding marker as well as functional illumination. At 218mm width the fitting occupies a standard brick pier width without overhanging.
Elstead backs the Helsingor with a 15-year warranty. The E27 socket accepts standard LED, halogen or filament bulbs, giving flexibility to choose light temperature and lumen output based on the specific installation site. Most users pair this with a warm-white 8-12W LED bulb between 2700K-3000K for residential pathways and entrance lighting.

Frequently Asked
How does the PIR sensor work?
The passive infrared sensor detects movement within its field of view and automatically switches the light on. After a period with no detected movement (typically 30 seconds to several minutes, depending on the specific sensor model), the light switches off again. The exact detection range and time delay depend on the sensor specification and installation position.
What bulb should I use?
The fitting takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W, sold separately. Most users choose a warm-white LED bulb between 8-12W and 2700K-3000K for residential pathways and entrance lighting. Higher-lumen output bulbs suit longer driveways or areas requiring brighter security lighting.
Can it be installed in coastal areas?
The IP44 rating provides protection against water splashes and dust, making the fitting suitable for most outdoor UK installations including coastal environments. However, in severe coastal exposure with salt spray, the black finish may require periodic cleaning to maintain appearance.
What size post or pillar does it fit?
The 218mm width sits comfortably on standard UK brick piers (typically 215mm square) without overhanging. The circular base plate is drilled for fixing to the top of the pier or post. Ensure the post or pillar is structurally sound before mounting.
