Description

This ground spike provides a mounting solution for Sandbanks and Poole bollard lights, allowing installation in soft ground without the need for concrete foundations. The spike consists of a 136mm diameter galvanised steel mounting plate with a central fixing point and a 550mm tapered steel shaft that terminates in a pointed tip designed to penetrate soil, turf and lawn.

Designed for gardens, lawns, landscaped borders and pathway edges where subsurface installation is impractical or undesirable, the spike allows bollards to be repositioned seasonally or moved as garden layouts change. The pointed shaft is driven into the ground using a rubber mallet or similar soft-face hammer, with the mounting plate sitting at ground level once installed. The galvanised finish provides corrosion resistance in outdoor conditions.

The 550mm shaft length suits most garden soil conditions and provides lateral stability once bedded in. In very soft ground or areas with heavy clay, the shaft may need to be driven deeper to ensure the bollard remains upright under wind load. The 136mm mounting plate diameter matches the base footprint of both Sandbanks and Poole bollard models, with pre-drilled fixing holes aligning with the bollard's base plate for a secure mechanical connection.

Frequently Asked

What bollards is this spike compatible with?

The spike is designed specifically for Sandbanks and Poole bollard models from Garden Zone. The 136mm mounting plate diameter and fixing hole pattern match the base plate of these bollards. It is not compatible with other manufacturers' bollards unless they share the same base dimensions.

What ground conditions is it suitable for?

The spike works best in soft to medium-firm soil, turf, lawn and cultivated garden borders. In very hard or stony ground, pre-drilling a pilot hole may be necessary. In sandy or very soft soil, the 550mm depth may not provide sufficient lateral support, and a deeper spike or concrete base may be preferable.

How is the spike installed?

Drive the pointed end into the ground using a rubber mallet or soft-face hammer, striking the mounting plate directly until it sits level with the soil surface. Avoid using a steel hammer directly on the galvanised plate as this can damage the coating. Once the spike is installed, the bollard base is fixed to the mounting plate using the pre-drilled holes.

Can the spike be removed and reused?

Yes. The spike can be pulled from the ground and repositioned elsewhere in the garden. Some distortion of the shaft may occur during removal if the ground is very compacted, but the galvanised steel construction allows for multiple installations in typical garden soil.
