Description
The Chelsea is a half wall lantern handcrafted from solid copper with a clear polycarbonate lens, designed to mount flush against exterior walls. The lantern houses a single E27 bulb up to 60W (sold separately) inside a four-sided glass enclosure with decorative acanthus leaf moulding at each corner and a stepped copper finial at the top.
Designed for entryways, porch areas, courtyard walls and garden pathways, the half-wall format gives the visual presence of a full lantern while reducing projection from the wall to 190mm. The IP44 rating protects against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction, making the Chelsea suitable for positions under eaves, covered porches, and partially exposed wall surfaces where direct rainfall does not hit the fitting.
The copper construction develops a natural patina over time as the metal oxidises, shifting from the polished rose-copper finish visible at installation to deeper brown and green tones depending on exposure to moisture and air. This patina process can be accelerated by coastal salt air or slowed in sheltered positions, so no two Chelsea lanterns age identically. The 610mm height and 250mm width suit residential scale architecture without overwhelming a typical doorway or window surround.
The Chelsea range from Norlys includes matching wall-mounted, post-top, pedestal and pendant variants in the same copper construction, allowing coordinated outdoor lighting across multiple fittings. The 10-year guarantee reflects the durability of the solid copper frame and IP-rated seals.

Frequently Asked
What does IP44 mean for outdoor use?
IP44 provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction. The Chelsea is suitable for covered porches, under eaves, and partially sheltered walls, but should not be installed where it receives direct sustained rainfall or full exposure to driving rain.
How does the copper patina develop?
Solid copper oxidises naturally when exposed to air and moisture, shifting from polished rose-copper to brown and eventually to green verdigris over months or years. The rate depends on climate, exposure and proximity to salt air. This patina is a feature of natural copper and protects the metal beneath.
What bulb should I use?
The Chelsea takes any standard E27 bulb up to 60W. Most users choose a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to replicate the appearance of traditional gas lanterns. Bulbs are sold separately.
Can the patina be removed or slowed?
The patina can be removed with copper polish and a soft cloth, returning the lantern to its original polished finish. To slow patina development, apply a clear lacquer coat after installation. Leaving the copper untreated allows it to age naturally.
