Description
The Chawton is a 182mm wall-mounted picture light with a rectangular dark bronze shade mounted on an articulated arm with two knuckle joints. The shade houses two E14 candle bulb fittings (bulbs sold separately, maximum 40W per socket), and the dual-joint arm allows the shade to be angled towards artwork, mirrors, or wall features to direct light where it's needed.
Designed for hanging above framed paintings, prints, photographs and mirrors in living rooms, hallways, dining rooms and bedroom alcoves, the Chawton suits traditional and period interiors where a visible picture light is part of the decorative scheme. The 186mm projection from the wall means the light clears most standard picture frames by 50-80mm, allowing the shade to sit above the frame without touching it. The fixture mounts to a standard UK single-gang backplate and connects to mains switching or a picture light circuit.
The dark bronze finish is an oil-rubbed metal treatment that shows slight tonal variation across the surface, giving depth and a hand-finished appearance rather than a uniform plated look. The rectangular shade measures approximately 182mm wide, which suits artworks and mirrors between 400mm and 800mm wide — narrower pieces can look over-lit, wider pieces may need two fixtures spaced along the top edge. The metal construction gives the fitting a 0.8kg weight that requires secure wall fixing into brick, block or timber studs.

Frequently Asked
What bulbs does it take?
The Chawton takes two E14 (small Edison screw) candle bulbs, maximum 40W per socket. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K for a soft wash of light over artwork.
What size artwork does it suit?
The 182mm-wide shade works best on framed pieces between 400mm and 800mm wide. Narrower artworks may appear over-lit; wider pieces such as large landscape paintings or mirrors over 1m wide often benefit from two Chawton fixtures spaced along the top edge.
Can the arm be adjusted after installation?
Yes. The dual knuckle joints allow the shade to be angled up, down and rotated side-to-side once mounted, so you can direct the light towards the centre of the artwork or adjust for different frame depths without re-wiring.
How is it wired?
The fixture mounts to a standard UK single-gang backplate and connects to mains wiring, typically switched from a wall switch or a dedicated picture light circuit. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician to Part P Building Regulations.
