Two bands of pattern are etched into the clay by hand, one around the upper body and one lower down, each a run of chevrons cut in short strokes with plain ground left between them. The finish is chalky and matt, a grey deep enough to read almost charcoal outdoors, and the surface takes light without throwing any of it back.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 50cm across and 36cm high there is room in it for an olive or a citrus tree, which is the planting the size was chosen for. It is frost proof, so it can stand outside all year with the plant still in it, and there are drainage holes in the base. At 8kg empty it is heavy to shift, so its position is best settled before it is filled.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eZadie is built by coiling: rolls of clay are laid one on another and then smoothed into shape, so the wall thickness and the profile vary a little from planter to planter. The pattern is etched by hand once the shape is made.
