ydun-water-hyacinth-placemat-natural
Ydun Water Hyacinth Placemat - Natural

Description

This round placemat is woven from 100% water hyacinth, 35cm across and finished in its natural colour. The dried stems are plaited into a chunky braid, then coiled in a spiral that starts at the centre and works out to the rim, so each row follows the curve of the mat. Water hyacinth is a plant fibre, and woven this way it gives a table a soft, textured surface that feels relaxed rather than formal. At 35cm across there is room for a dinner plate with a border of weave showing all round, and at 0.16KG it is light enough to lift, shake out and stack away.

It belongs on the kitchen or dining table, laid under a plate and a bowl for an everyday breakfast or a long weekend lunch. When the table fills up, bread or fruit can sit straight on the weave. The natural colour sits happily alongside patterned ceramics, plain white china, wooden boards and coloured glassware. A round mat suits a round table especially well, with one at each place following the line of the edge, and it looks just as much at home on a square or rectangular table for a softer, more casual look. A single mat in the middle of the table also makes a neat base for a fruit bowl, a bread board or a jug of flowers.

The mat is made entirely of water hyacinth. It does not go in the dishwasher, and it is not for the microwave or the oven either. Plant fibres vary from stem to stem, so the plaits differ slightly in tone across the mat, which is part of the appeal of a woven piece. For a layered place setting, lay the mat first, add a dinner plate, then a smaller plate or bowl on top.

Specification

Diameter

35cm

Material

100% Water Hyacinth

Colour

Natural

Dishwasher safe

No

Microwave safe

No

Oven safe

No

Weight

0.16KG

Frequently Asked

What is the placemat made of?

It is made of 100% water hyacinth, with the dried stems plaited into a braid and coiled into a round spiral from the centre outwards.

How big is the placemat?

It is round and 35cm across, which leaves room for a dinner plate with a border of weave showing all the way round.

Can I put the placemat in the dishwasher?

No. The maker marks it as not for the dishwasher, and it should not go in the microwave or the oven either.

Can food sit directly on the placemat?

Yes.
