The body tapers outward from the base and draws in again at the shoulder to a plain rim with a shallow pouring lip. A strap handle springs from just under the rim and joins low on the body. The glaze is grey and laid on in layers, so it breaks lighter over the rim and over the faint horizontal banding round the body, and pools darker where the surface falls away.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 16cm it stands lower than a wine bottle, so it can sit in the middle of a laid table without blocking the view across it, and a litre is water for a meal rather than a single glass. The rest of the Valinha range carries the same glaze: a dinner plate, a side plate, a cereal bowl, a footed bowl, a round platter and a serving bowl, and there is a larger jug above this one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe jug is earthenware, poured into a mould from Portuguese clay and finished by hand.
