A small cream glass ball, slightly flattened, held in a fine brass cradle that wraps the top of the glass and closes with a turned brass collar above it. The cradle is made of thin wire-like straps that follow the curve of the ball, so the brass reads as a line drawing over the cream. A white flex runs up from the collar. The glass is a warm butter cream, even in tone and glossy, and the bottom of the ball is left open so the light falls directly downward. It is small in the hand and reads as jewellery rather than as a shade. It measures 18cm across and 24cm tall, in glass and metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt suits a table, an island or a hallway, hung low enough to be looked at rather than into. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
