A solid rectangular block sits flat on the floor, a slim column rises from it, and a long arm crosses that column at a large knurled pivot, running back past the joint as its own counterweight. At the front a cylindrical shade with a domed top turns on a second joint. Every part is brass, aged and mottled with the tool marks left in, and a rust braided flex runs from the shade back along the arm. It stands 150cm and the arm reaches 67cm.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA reach of 67cm is what separates this from a lamp that stands beside a chair: the block can sit behind a sofa or at the end of one and the shade still arrives over a lap. The arm swings on the column and the head turns through a full circle on its own joint, so the light goes onto a page, a chair or a wall. The shade is closed at the top and open at the mouth, so almost nothing spills upward.
