A solid rectangular block sits flat on the desk, a plain column rises from it, and a long arm crosses that column at a large knurled pivot, running back past the joint as its own counterweight. At the front end a cylindrical shade with a domed top turns on a second joint. The brass is aged and mottled with the tool marks left in, and a rust braided flex loops from the shade back along the arm.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo joints and a counterweight are what make it a working lamp rather than a fixed one. The arm swings up and down on the column and the head turns through a full circle on its own joint, so the shade can be aimed at a page, a keyboard or a wall. The shade is closed at the top and open at the mouth, so the light goes where it is pointed and almost none of it spills upward. It stands 55cm tall and reaches 45cm forward, which needs a desk of some depth.
