A large opal ball hung from a bright brass ring, so the fitting reads as a circle above a circle. Bands of soft green marbling sweep diagonally across the glass in fine streaks, wider at one side and fading out at the other, so no two of these are identical. The brass ring is a plain open loop on a short post above a small brass cap that covers the top of the ball, and a black flex runs up from it. The glass is otherwise warm opal and generous in size. The ring is the whole of the ornament. It measures 30cm across and 40cm tall, in glass and metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt suits a table, an island or a hallway, hung low enough to be looked at rather than into. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.
